Roof Repair Services in Minneapolis, MN

Fast, reliable roof repairs that stop leaks and damage before they spread.

Thompson Exteriors repairs shingle, flashing, and ventilation issues across South Minneapolis, so you don't have to pay for a full replacement you don't need. As a third-generation, family-run crew, we diagnose the actual problem first, with owner Peter Thompson personally checking every repair before we call the job done.

What Happens When a Small Roof Problem Waits

A leak that looks minor from the attic rarely stays that way.

Hidden Leaks

A cracked flashing seal or a handful of missing shingles can let water into your attic for months before it shows up as a stain on your ceiling.

Rising Costs

A repair that costs a few hundred dollars today can turn into thousands in rotted decking, insulation, and drywall repair if it's ignored through another season.

Losing Comfort & Safety

Gaps around vents, flashing, and shingles let conditioned air escape and moisture in, driving up bills while weakening your roof's ability to handle the next storm.

Ready for a fix?

Not sure if that stain on your ceiling means a small repair or something bigger? We'll inspect and give you an honest answer

What to Expect From Your Roof Repair

From first call to final walkthrough, here's how we work.

We Diagnose the Leak

We inspect your attic, flashing, vents, and shingles to trace the leak back to its actual source, not just the spot where water is showing up inside. We photograph what we find and explain it in plain language.

We Scope the Fix

We put together a clear, written scope covering exactly what needs to be repaired, whether that's flashing, a section of shingles, or ventilation, so you know exactly what you're paying for before work starts.

We Match Your Materials

We source shingles and flashing that match your existing roof as closely as possible so the repair blends in rather than standing out, and we use IKO-certified materials wherever compatible.

We Fix It Right

Most roof repairs are completed in a single visit, with the crew testing the area before they leave to make sure the leak is actually resolved. Peter checks the finished work on-site before we consider the job complete.

FAQs

Some of our most Frequently Asked Questions.

Should I replace or Repair my Roof?

If the damage is limited to a specific area, like a section of flashing, a handful of shingles, or a single vent boot, a repair is usually enough. Full replacement typically makes sense when the roof is near the end of its lifespan or the damage is widespread across multiple areas. During your free inspection, we'll give you an honest answer instead of upselling a replacement you don't need.

How quickly can you fix a roof leak?

Most roof repairs are scheduled within a few days of your inspection, and many are completed in a single visit. If the leak is actively causing interior damage, let us know when you call and we'll prioritize getting someone out sooner. We'll give you a specific timeline once we've seen the extent of the repair needed.

Will a repair actually stop my leak for good?

When the repair addresses the actual source of the leak, rather than just the spot where water is showing up inside, it should resolve the issue. That's why we trace every leak back to its origin during the inspection instead of guessing. We also test the repaired area before we leave the job site to confirm the fix is holding.

How much does roof repair cost?

Cost depends on what's actually causing the problem, whether it's a section of flashing, a few shingles, or a ventilation issue, so we don't provide pricing without inspecting the roof first. Every estimate is free and written in detail, and financing is available for larger repair projects.

Do small roof leaks really need to be fixed right away?

Yes. Even a slow leak that isn't dripping yet is usually saturating insulation or decking behind the scenes, and that damage gets more expensive the longer it sits. A repair that costs a few hundred dollars today often prevents a repair costing several times that a year or two down the road.

Will my insurance cover a roof repair?

It depends on the cause. Sudden damage from a storm, falling branch, or hail is often covered, while gradual wear and tear typically isn't. If your leak may be storm-related, we can document the damage and help you understand whether it's worth filing a claim.

They did two roofs for us after a bad hailstorm here in Minneapolis. For one of these they replaced a skylight and we were very happy with the product they suggested. This firm is especially skilled at doing roofs on older Minneapolis houses. (Both of our properties are over 100 years old.) It is clear they have a lot of experience working in the inner city.

I got new siding and a new roof by Thompson last July, with final completion of a remaining task the following August. The workmanship was excellent, with detailed attention on the siding and trim. Peter and crew took extra time to make sure the porch (which was sinking since it was built in 1919) had stable footings, and they jacked it up to make it level with the house to complete the siding. It meant the doors and windows were now plum, whereas before they were tilted, hence the remaining task to fill in gaps of siding on the interior porch and at the door (all were unexpected to the original plan). I had some frustration with nailing timelines down and follow up: I had a limited window in which the work needed to happen (6 weeks) because I was otherwise away and I wanted to be there to oversee the work. The roof and siding were completed the morning I was leaving town, which was stressful, but it got done. In the end I would use them again because quality workmanship is more important to me than project management (and more rare), but know that they are less strong at organization and timelines/appointments. I experienced more on the fly follow up, texts and drop by questions (usually on evenings or Saturday) to get remaining insurance estimates, measurements, colors, payment etc. He seemed totally swamped, but I think this is just the way Peter rolls.

Great experience with storm damage roof replacement, looking forward to siding replacement. Peter came to the house to review the job & provided shingle samples including higher spec level that we would have had to pay additional cost above insurance settlement. No pressure to go with the higher spec/cost option, which we declined. Lead time quoted at the house was 3-4 weeks and the roof was replaced 4 weeks later. Building permit was pulled before starting the job. Roofing crew completed the house & garage in one day: tear-off, new shingles, thorough clean-up of yard, and waste trailer hauled away. Peter was personally on-site multiple times during the day to oversee the job. Overall wouldn't hesitate to hire them again, they lived up to my expectations based on a doing good work on a small

Thompson Exteriors quote included pulling a permit and removal and reinstall of the gutters. The permit was never pulled. The gutters were never removed so they are full of debris and nails that my dogs/kids could get hurt on. Some shingles weren’t nailed down properly. They damaged a piece of siding during the project and the dryer vent has been blocked since the roof was installed. I have contacted Peter to make repairs and pull the permit so that I can make the final payment but he has been ghosting me. So beware.

Peter and his crew did a great job reroofing our house in 2020. They do quality work - it still looks brand new! A portion of our home had a flat roof that we wanted to add a gable to. Peter was able to understand what we were looking for and make recommendations on the design. We ended up with a gable that was constructed to blend with the existing architecture and finishes seamlessly. We plan to use them for additional exterior work in the future.

Overall, a really good roofing job from Thompson Exteriors. The new shingles look nice and professional, and the extra work to reinforce my old house’s sagging eve issue was worth it. Once the work got started, they were consistent and professional every day that they showed up. Job didn’t take relatively long and workers were there consistently every day until to the work was finished. One constructive piece of feedback: They need project managers. At times it was hard to nail down the exact start date, and felt like it was pushed several times. This may have been due to too many jobs on the plate of my point-of-contact, or just simply the lack of a project manager.

Thompson was easy to work with. I had two different hail events that had to be adjusted. But after the insurance company completed their duties the work to fix was completed smoothly.

The owner was responsive when I first reached out. He showed up at the wrong time (about an hour early) for our original meeting but thankfully my father in law was there to discuss the project. The owner declined my job stating “he was too busy” and it would be too complicated. I had explained before our meeting that I would need a custom fit door and he said no problem as he has done new doors in my neighborhood before. However, he seemed caught off guard by the fact that the door needing to be replaced was not a standard size as the home was built in 1912. I appreciate his honesty and time; however, using the words “too busy” just seemed unprofessional in my opinion.

Peter and his roofing team just did a great job on our house. They were friendly and worked hard to complete the project before it rained. They did a good job cleaning up and left very little for me to find. His estimate was spot on and was upfront about all costs to the project. He also took the time to come to our house to explain the quote, which no other company attempted or followed up. The final bill was under all of his competitors and the quality of work was excellent. I would highly recommend using his company or getting a quote from him with all the other companies you are going to ask.

We worked with Thompson Exteriors to do a major home exterior project consisting of new siding, trim, roof, flat roof finishing, painting of a detached garage and teardown of an old chimney and replacing with a new chimney in 2019. We are very happy with the end result and with the communication that took place along the way. A brutal hail storm led to us requiring another new roof in 2024. Thompson Exteriors did a great job of working with is to have our replacement roof done quickly and well. Our 100+ year old home looks great and recommend Thompson Exteriors.
