Hail Damage Roof Repair in Minneapolis, MN

Free hail damage inspections, documentation, and insurance claim support for Minneapolis homeowners.

After a hailstorm, Thompson Exteriors inspects your roof, siding, and gutters for damage that's often invisible from the ground. For over 30 years, our family-run crew has helped Minneapolis homeowners document hail damage and get insurance claims approved, with owner Peter Thompson personally reviewing every inspection.

What Happens When Hail Damage Goes Unchecked

Hail damage rarely looks dramatic, which is exactly why it gets missed.

Hidden Leaks

Hail bruises the protective granules off shingles without always cracking them outright, and that thinned spot can let water through months after the storm.

Missed Claim Windows

Most insurance policies have a filing deadline after a hailstorm. Waiting to notice damage on your own can mean losing your right to file, even on legitimate damage.

Compounding Damage

Hail-weakened shingles fail faster in wind and sun, so damage that goes unrepaired after one storm often turns into a bigger problem before the next one hits.

Ready for help?

Not sure if last week's storm actually damaged your roof? We'll inspect your entire exterior and document what we find, at no cost.

How We Help After the Hail Storm

From first call to final repair, here's how we work.

We Inspect for Hail Damage

We check your roof, siding, gutters, and downspouts for granule loss, bruising, dents, and cracked shingles, using close inspection methods that catch damage a quick glance from the ground would miss. We photograph every finding in detail..

We Build Your Damage Report

We put together a written report you can submit with your insurance claim, organized by area and severity, so your adjuster has clear documentation to work from instead of relying on a quick visual pass.

We Meet Your Adjuster

When possible, we walk the property with your insurance adjuster, pointing out hail bruising and granule loss that's easy to miss from a standard inspection, and answering technical questions about scope.

We Repair the Damage

Once your claim is approved, we complete the repair using IKO-certified materials and the same craftsmanship as our standard roofing projects, with Peter checking the finished work before we call it done.

FAQs

Some of our most Frequently Asked Questions.

How can I tell if my roof has hail damage?

Hail damage often looks like small, dark bruises where granules have been knocked loose, rather than obvious holes or cracks, which makes it easy to miss from the ground. You might also notice granules collecting in your gutters, dented gutters or downspouts, or soft spots on shingles. Because it's subtle, a close inspection after any significant hailstorm is the most reliable way to know for sure.

How big does hail need to be to damage a roof?

Hail as small as an inch in diameter can bruise or crack asphalt shingles, especially on roofs that are already a few years old, and larger hail increases the risk significantly. Wind speed during the storm also plays a role, since wind-driven hail hits at more damaging angles. We check for damage after any storm with hail reported in the area, regardless of the reported size.

How long do I have to file a hail damage claim?

Filing windows vary by insurance company and policy, and many insurers require claims to be filed within one to two years of the storm date. Because deadlines and coverage terms vary, we recommend scheduling an inspection as soon as possible after a hailstorm so you don't risk losing your right to file on legitimate damage.

Will a hail damage claim raise my insurance rates?

Hail and storm events are generally treated as no-fault occurrences by insurers, so the rate impact from a single weather-related claim is typically less significant than claims considered your fault. Rate policies vary by insurer and state, so we recommend discussing specific concerns with your insurance agent directly.

What if the insurance adjuster doesn't find any damage?

This happens often, since adjusters cover many properties during active hail season and hail bruising can be subtle. We provide our own detailed photo documentation and, when possible, meet the adjuster on-site to point out what our inspection found. A second, independent look frequently changes the outcome of a claim.

Do I have to use the contractor my insurance company recommends?

No, homeowners have the right to choose their own contractor for hail damage repairs, regardless of who the insurance company suggests. Working with a contractor who represents your interests rather than the insurance company's can make a meaningful difference in the scope and quality of the repair you receive.

They did two roofs for us after a bad hailstorm here in Minneapolis. For one of these they replaced a skylight and we were very happy with the product they suggested. This firm is especially skilled at doing roofs on older Minneapolis houses. (Both of our properties are over 100 years old.) It is clear they have a lot of experience working in the inner city.

I got new siding and a new roof by Thompson last July, with final completion of a remaining task the following August. The workmanship was excellent, with detailed attention on the siding and trim. Peter and crew took extra time to make sure the porch (which was sinking since it was built in 1919) had stable footings, and they jacked it up to make it level with the house to complete the siding. It meant the doors and windows were now plum, whereas before they were tilted, hence the remaining task to fill in gaps of siding on the interior porch and at the door (all were unexpected to the original plan). I had some frustration with nailing timelines down and follow up: I had a limited window in which the work needed to happen (6 weeks) because I was otherwise away and I wanted to be there to oversee the work. The roof and siding were completed the morning I was leaving town, which was stressful, but it got done. In the end I would use them again because quality workmanship is more important to me than project management (and more rare), but know that they are less strong at organization and timelines/appointments. I experienced more on the fly follow up, texts and drop by questions (usually on evenings or Saturday) to get remaining insurance estimates, measurements, colors, payment etc. He seemed totally swamped, but I think this is just the way Peter rolls.

Great experience with storm damage roof replacement, looking forward to siding replacement. Peter came to the house to review the job & provided shingle samples including higher spec level that we would have had to pay additional cost above insurance settlement. No pressure to go with the higher spec/cost option, which we declined. Lead time quoted at the house was 3-4 weeks and the roof was replaced 4 weeks later. Building permit was pulled before starting the job. Roofing crew completed the house & garage in one day: tear-off, new shingles, thorough clean-up of yard, and waste trailer hauled away. Peter was personally on-site multiple times during the day to oversee the job. Overall wouldn't hesitate to hire them again, they lived up to my expectations based on a doing good work on a small

Thompson Exteriors quote included pulling a permit and removal and reinstall of the gutters. The permit was never pulled. The gutters were never removed so they are full of debris and nails that my dogs/kids could get hurt on. Some shingles weren’t nailed down properly. They damaged a piece of siding during the project and the dryer vent has been blocked since the roof was installed. I have contacted Peter to make repairs and pull the permit so that I can make the final payment but he has been ghosting me. So beware.

Peter and his crew did a great job reroofing our house in 2020. They do quality work - it still looks brand new! A portion of our home had a flat roof that we wanted to add a gable to. Peter was able to understand what we were looking for and make recommendations on the design. We ended up with a gable that was constructed to blend with the existing architecture and finishes seamlessly. We plan to use them for additional exterior work in the future.

Overall, a really good roofing job from Thompson Exteriors. The new shingles look nice and professional, and the extra work to reinforce my old house’s sagging eve issue was worth it. Once the work got started, they were consistent and professional every day that they showed up. Job didn’t take relatively long and workers were there consistently every day until to the work was finished. One constructive piece of feedback: They need project managers. At times it was hard to nail down the exact start date, and felt like it was pushed several times. This may have been due to too many jobs on the plate of my point-of-contact, or just simply the lack of a project manager.

Thompson was easy to work with. I had two different hail events that had to be adjusted. But after the insurance company completed their duties the work to fix was completed smoothly.

The owner was responsive when I first reached out. He showed up at the wrong time (about an hour early) for our original meeting but thankfully my father in law was there to discuss the project. The owner declined my job stating “he was too busy” and it would be too complicated. I had explained before our meeting that I would need a custom fit door and he said no problem as he has done new doors in my neighborhood before. However, he seemed caught off guard by the fact that the door needing to be replaced was not a standard size as the home was built in 1912. I appreciate his honesty and time; however, using the words “too busy” just seemed unprofessional in my opinion.

Peter and his roofing team just did a great job on our house. They were friendly and worked hard to complete the project before it rained. They did a good job cleaning up and left very little for me to find. His estimate was spot on and was upfront about all costs to the project. He also took the time to come to our house to explain the quote, which no other company attempted or followed up. The final bill was under all of his competitors and the quality of work was excellent. I would highly recommend using his company or getting a quote from him with all the other companies you are going to ask.

We worked with Thompson Exteriors to do a major home exterior project consisting of new siding, trim, roof, flat roof finishing, painting of a detached garage and teardown of an old chimney and replacing with a new chimney in 2019. We are very happy with the end result and with the communication that took place along the way. A brutal hail storm led to us requiring another new roof in 2024. Thompson Exteriors did a great job of working with is to have our replacement roof done quickly and well. Our 100+ year old home looks great and recommend Thompson Exteriors.
